Ten newspapers won the coveted Triple Crown in the Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and section contests that ended Wednesday.
The Boston Globe and The Washington Post, competing in the over-250,00 circulation division, won Top 10 recognition for their daily, Sunday and special sections. Joining them were: Palm Beach Post and Omaha World Herald in the 100,000-250,000 category; Colorado Springs Gazette in the 40,000-100,000 circulation division; Beaver County (Pa.) Times and Bellingham (Wash.) Herald in under-40,000; and the Hilton Head (S.C.) Island Packet; Naperville (Ill.) Sun and Sauk Valley Newspapers (Sterling, Ill.) in under-20,000.
Last year, four newspapers overall earned the honor.
"In these times of trouble (for the newspaper business), I feel that this will be great motivation for my staff to continue to do great work," said Globe sports editor Joe Sullivan.
The top 5 finalists in the writing categories will be posted on the APSE Web site _ apse.dallasnews.com _ by April 1. Winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE convention in Pittsburgh.
