Dateline: ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.Six newspapers swept the section judging of the Associated Press Sports Editors annual contest by finishing in the top 10 of the daily, Sunday, and special section categories.
Judging, which ended Wednesday after four days, was by 80 sports editors from newspapers of varying circulation sizes. Sections are not ranked but grouped in two categories: top 10 and honorable mention.
The Glens Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star was the only paper under 40,000 circulation to win the APSE "triple crown." The Wichita Eagle won three section awards in the 40,000-100,000 category.
The Palm Beach Post, Hartford Courant, and St. Paul Pioneer Press had the triple honors in the 100,000-250,000 division. The Dallas Morning News was the only triple crown winner in the over-250,000 circulation class. The Palm Beach Post was the only repeat triple crown newspaper.
Writing finalists were also selected in 21 categories. Ed Hinton of the Orlando Sentinel and Pat Forde of the Louisville Courier Journal were finalists in three categories. Hinton made the finals of news, features, and investigative; Forde in game story, features, and columns.
Final judging by editors and managing editors will be announced in April.
